Unit 1 - AOS2 - Endocrine system Flashcards
3 processes influenced by endocrine system
- growth and development
- metabolism
- tissue function
Hormones
Glands release hormones
Hypothalamus
In the lower central part of brain
2 processes:
- controls the nerve cells that control the pituitary gland. By producing chemicals that stimulate or suppress hormone secretions from the pituitary.
- growth, reproduction , body temp
Why is pituitary gland called ‘’master gland”
Because it makes hormones that control several other glands
Endorphins
Chemicals that act on the nervous system (reduce feeling of pain)
Thyroid gland
Front part of lower neck
Two jobs :
- play role in development of brain and nervous system in kids
- helps kids and teens brined grow and develop
- produce hormones to control rate cells burn fuels from food to produce energy.
Thymus gland
In chest between breast nine and heart
- create T cells which are an immune system cell.
-
T cell
- immune system cell created by thymus gland
- hell destroy infected cells
Adrenal glands
On top of the kidneys
Inner :
- Medulla
- produces adrenaline (increases BP and HR when stressed)
Outer :
- Cortex
- salt and water balance in the body
Pancreas
Apart of the hormone secreting system
- secretes insulin and glucagon
Target cells
Receive message (have a receptor )
What do target cells build once they obtain the proper hormone ?
They will then create various proteins
