UNIT 1 - AOS 1 - bioethics Flashcards
What are the 3 major approaches
- Consequences based approach
- Duty/rules - based approach
- Virtues-based approach
Consequences based approach
Which action produces the MOST GOOD and LEAST HARM?
Rules based approach
which action is MORALLY RIGHT despite consequences?
Name all of the bioethical concepts
- INTEGRITY
- JUSTICE
- BENEFIENCE
- RESPECT
- NON-MALEFICENCE
Virtues-based approach
Which action would a GOOD PERSON choose?
Integrity
Doing the right thing when no-one is looking?
Justice
People get what they deserve
Beneficence
Doing good to others
Non-maleficence
Doing no harm
Respect
Honouring someone’s feelings, needs or decisions.
Ethical implications - in terms of gene editing
- Right or wrong?
- Informed consent?
- Secure storage of DNA info (who has access?)
- Reliability of results?
ADV - use of bacteria for gene cloning has overcome animal welfare issues association with extracting proteins.
DIS - Some view as unethical despite benefits it could provide.
Social implications - In terms of gene cloning/editing
= The impact of tech on more than 1 or 2 individuals.
- Incorrect identification of suspect
- Privacy of info collected
- Knowledge of a possible genetic disease
ADV - decrease cost for bacteria, increase employment
DIS - Misuse (performance enhancing drugs etc. )
Economic implications
= Cost implications of technology
- Expense of treatment
ADV - using bacteria for gene cloning -> made products of therapeutics (e.g. insulin) relatively cheap
DIS - Depends on country & SES
Biological implications
= Can affect not only organism in question
- Altering the affected genome
ADV - made safer treatments for disorders & vaccines, decrease chance of side effects.
DIS - increase world pop # = ^ strain on enviro = changes course of natural selection & evolution.
