- multiple physical SYMPTOMS present for at least 2 years
- patient refuses to accept reassurance or negative test results

- persistent belief in the presence of an underlying serious DISEASE (e.g. cancer)

A
- loss of motor or sensory function with no cause
- patient doesnt consciously feign the symptoms or seek material gain
- patients may be indifferent to their apparent disorder

A
- process of ‘separating off’ certain memories from normal consciousness
- loss of function is non-physical (e.g. loss of memory)
- involves psychiatric symptoms (e.g. amnesia, fugue, stupor)
