Understanding Chemical Equations Flashcards
System and surrounding
Energy can be transfered from one substance to another
What are reactants
Reactants are pure substance that go through chemical changes
What are products
Productust are pure subtances formed by chemical changes.
the properties of the products are always different from the properties of the reactants
Law of Conservation of Energy
The Law of Conservation of Energy
states that in a physical or chemical
change, energy may be converted
from one form to another, but the total
amount of energy remains constant
Law of Conservation of Mass
The Law of Conservation of Mass
states that in any chemical reaction,
the mass of the products created is
always equal to the mass of the
reactants
* Matter cannot be created nor
destroyed
a chemical change
has probably taken place.
-Heat is produced (exothermic) or
absorbed (endothermic)
-Gas bubbles form in a liquid
-The starting material is used up
-Grains of solid precipitate form in a liquid
and a new colour appears
-A change in odour
-A starting colour disappears
