Transition Metals Flashcards
Nearly all transition meltal groups 3-12
Are able to form more than one cation
How do we name metals with more than one charge
Classical system
And stock system
Classical system
The classical system is based on the Latin names for metals that form more than one ion example: iron (fe)=ferrum
,copper (cu)=cuprum,lead(pb)=plumbum
Rlues classifly system
The “UM” ending is dropped, and the suffix:•“IC” is added to indicate the ion with the higher charge•“OUS” is added to indicate the ion with the lower charge
Stock system
The stock system uses the English name of the elemen rather than the latin name.
If an metal can form more than one cation, the charge used in bonding is written in brackets as a Roman numeral after the name of the metal.
