Neglected tropical diseases (NTD’s
A diverse group of 20 conditions1 that are mainly prevalent in tropical areas such as Cambodia, often related to environmental conditions and many of them are vector-borne, or have animal reservoirs such as dengue and leprosy.
Social protection
Intended to protect and support the poorest and most vulnerable people which covers assistance and support services provided to persons who are: unemployed, homeless, low-income earners, alcohol and substance abusers, or those who have injuries or diseases including services to families and children.
Interventions
Interventions that reduce human exposure to disease by providing a clean environment in which to live involving both behaviours and facilities which work together to form a hygienic environment by safely separating human waste from human contact.
Stagnant water
Water that sits in a place without having any area to drain in a timely manner.
Sustainable development goals (SDG’s)
The Global Goals are a plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity for developed and developing countries in global partnership by building a more equal and secure world by 2030.
Tuberculosis
An infectious disease caused by infection with the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium that usually affects the lungs but it can also infect any other organ of the body, with the most common symptoms being a persistent cough spread from person to person.
Waterborne diseases
Illnesses caused by microscopic organisms, like viruses and bacteria, that are ingested through contaminated water or by coming in contact with feces, such as typhoid, cholera, or dysentery.
What is the WaterAid program?
An international non-government organization dedicated to provision of clean and safe domestic water and sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people.
What is WaterAid’s vision?
As millions of people still lack access to basic water services, water aid’s vision is to see a world where everyone, everywhere has access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene.
What is WaterAid’s purpose?
Enables the world’s poorest people to gain access to clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene, allowing them to unlock their potential.
How does this program contribute to better human development?
Greater opportunities for farming due to water access leads to more possibilities for decision-making;
Adults are able to participate in the life of their community, and children attend school. This program has assisted in creating an environment in which people can develop to their full potential and lead productive lives;
What partnerships are involved in implementing WaterAid?
Water aid works with partnerships such as local communities because they understand local issues.

Reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100000 live births;
Reduce by one-third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases
through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and wellbeing;
Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access
to essential healthcare services and access to safe, effective, quality and
affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all;
Substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous
chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination;
Describe ethical purchasing as a method of social action
Making conscious decisions to purchase ethical and fair products, such using individual purchasing power to buy products that support actions to promote social groups, where the profits can be used to bring about social change.
Justify the importance of ethical purchasing
Ensures vulnerable famers and workers are not being exploited through avoiding products made by companies that are not manufacturing with social conscience, individuals can impact their profits and encourage change in their practices.
