Types Of Synovial Joints Flashcards
Name the 6 types of Synovial Joints
Plane
Hinge
Pivot
Condyloid
Saddle
Ball and socket
Plane Joint
Surfaces are flat and allow gliding
What is an example of a plane joint?
Metacarpals
Hinge joint
Cylindrical end conforms to trough-shaped end, allowing motion flexion/extension
What is an example of a hinge joint?
Humerus and ulna; elbow joint
Pivot joint
Rounded end conforms to a “sleeve” or ring of bone or ligaments, allowing only rotation
What is an example of a pivot joint?
Proximal radioulnar joint (supination/pronation)
Condyloid/ellipsoid joint
Oval surface of one bone fit to complementary depression of another bone, allowing all angular motions (2 planes of movement)
What is an example of a Condyloid/ellipsoid joint?
Radiocarpal joint (metacarpal/phalangeal joint); flexion & abduction
Saddle joint
Resemble Condyloid joints but bone ends have both concave and convex surfaces that fit together to allow more movement
What is an example of a saddle joint?
Carpometacarpal joint of the thumb
Ball and socket joint
Spherical/hemispherical head articulates with cup like socket, allowing multi-axial movement
What is an example of a ball and socket joint?
Glenohumeral joint or hip joint
