Joint Kinematics Flashcards
Kinematics
Study of movement of the body
Osteokinematics
Movement between BONES relative to sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes (joint rotations)
Arthrokinematics
Movement at the ARTICULAR SURFACES between bones
What are the 3 cardinal planes?
Frontal (coronal plane)
Sagittal plane
Transverse (horizontal) plane
What is AOR
Axis of rotation
Axis of rotation (AOR)
Straight line about which an object rotates; imaginary rod that passes through the center of a joint perpendicular to the plane of movement.
What is the movement of the arms in the frontal plane?
What is the AOR of Frontal plane?
Up & Down
Posterior/anterior
What is the movement of the arms in the sagittal plane?
What is the AOR in the sagittal plane?
Forward & Back
Medial/lateral
What is the movement of the arms in the transverse plane?
What is the AOR of transverse plane?
Side to side
Inferior/superior
What are the 2 types of osteokinematic movements that happen in the Sagittal plane?
Flexion/extension: shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, spine, etc.
Plantar-flex/dorsiflex: ankle
What are the 6 types of osteokinematic movements that happen in the Frontal plane?
Abduction/adduction: should, hip
Lateral flex (spine): spine
Elevation/depression: shoulder girdle
Up/down rotation: shoulder girdle
Inversion/eversion: intertarsal
Ulnar/radial deviation: wrist
What are the 3 types of osteokinematic movements that happen in the Transverse plane?
Medial/lateral (internal/external) rotation: Glenohumeral, hip
Rotation right/left: spine
Pronation/supination: radioulnar
What are the 3 fundamentals of Arthokinematics?
Roll
Slide
Spin
(Arthrokinematics) Roll
MULTIPLE points along one rotating Articular surface contact MULTIPLE points on another Articular surface (ex. A tire rolling on the street)
(Arthokinematics) Slide
a SINGLE point on one Articular surface contacts MULTIPLE points on another Articular surface (ex. Car tire sliding on an icy road).
