Types of protists and characteristics Flashcards
types of protists
protozoans (animal-like: unicellular, heterotrophs), sporazoans (parasitic, no movement, live in hosts), fungus-like protists
protozoans
amoeba, flagellates, ciliates,
amoeba
no cell wall, move with pseudopods, engulf bits of food by flowing around them (p)
flagellates
use whip-like extensions like flagella to move, some cause diseases (trichomonad feotus-mad cow disease) (p)
ciliates
move beating cilia-tiny hairs, key organisms in aquatic environments (p)
sporazoans
parasitic, don’t move, live inside a host
algae
multicellular, photosynthetic, no root-stem-or-leaves, each has chlorophyll
are algae plants
NO
euglenoids
aquatic, move around like animals, ingest food from surroundings when light is unavailable (TYPE OF ALGAE)
diatoms
gold, glass shell (silica), photosynthetic pigament called carotenoids-make them gold (algae)
dinoflagellates
spin around with flagella, responsible for red tides, can kill peoples and animals with toxins, some can glow (algae)
red algae
seaweed, not a plant, multicellular (marine organisms), red+blue pigments
fungus like protists
form delicate, netlike structures on surface of food source and get energy by decomposing organic material
slime molds
live in cool, moist, shady places where they grow on damp, organic matter
PLASMODIUM- lose cell membrane to become 1 huge cytoplasm with many nuclei
CELLULAR- exists as invdividual cells unless food is scarce where they produce a huge mass (fungus-like protists)
water molds
- live in water/moist places
- feed on dead organisms/parasitize plants
- some are fuzzy white overgrowths
