Plant Hormones Flashcards
Plant hormones do what…
regulate plant function: stimulate or suppress activity in another part, produced in one part of organism
Puberty-Like Hormones
Gibbrellens- produce major growth and dramatic increases in size: end seed dormancy, rapid growth of young seedlings, rapid growth of some flower stalks
What hormone helps with fruit ripening
Ethylene: spreads to its fellow fruit to help them ripen faster
What hormone stimulates cytokinesis
Cytokinis: final stage of cell division, produced in growing roots-seeds-and fruit
involved in growth of side branches
What hormone gives plants length
Auxins lengthen plant at growing tip-stimulates growth of primary stem, controls some form of tropism
What is tropism
movement of a plant in response to environmental stimulus- plants can respond to gravity, touch, light, and seasonal changes
phototropism
tendency of a plant to grow towards the light, auxins build up on the shaded side of the stem, cells on the shaded side lengthen, causes stem to bend towards light
Thigmotropism
plants response to touchlike stimuli: climbing plants and vines, plants that grow in direction of constant wind
Gravitropism
plants response to gravitational pull
+ gravitropism=downward root growth
- gravitropism= upward shoot growth
What other responses do plants have?
- some responses help protect plants against predators
- allow plants to capture food
Photoperiodism
response to changing lengths of day and night: triggers some plants to flower, triggers fall colours/winter dormancy of deciduous trees
