types of LTM Flashcards
what is the long term memory separated into
episodic, procedura, semantic memory
what is episodic memory
our ability to recall events
- time stamped
- remember who was there, objects etc
- make conscious effort to recall them
what is semantic memory
knowledge of the world- anything
- not time stamped- dont remember when or how we learnt
- have to deliberately recall these facts
what is procedural memory
memory of actions, skills, how we do things
- can recall these without conscious awareness- dont have to actively think about it
what memories are storeed in the motor cortex
procedural memories
what memories are stored in the frontal lobe
semantic and episodic memories
what memories are stored in the prefrontal cortex
short term memories
what memories are stored in the temporal lobe
long term semantic and episodic memories
what memories are stored in the amygdala
emotional memories
what memories are stored in the hippocampus
long term
semantic
episodic
what memories are stored in the cerebellum
procedural memories
Clive Wearing (CW)
- episodic memory in cw was severely impaired as a consequence of amnesia
- difficulty recalling events
- semantic memories relatively unaffected- still knew the meaning of words
- procedural memories also in tact- knew how to tie shoelaces
- clive could still play music
how is HM and CW evidence for different types of LTM
one store can be damaged but the other remains intact and unaffected
- also suggests that different types of memory are stored in different parts of the brain
