social learning theory Flashcards
1
Q
who was it introduced by
A
bandura
2
Q
what was it
A
development of the behaviourist approach
3
Q
assumptions:
A
- agrees with behaviorists in that much behaviour is learned through experience
- concerned with human rather than animal behaviour
- learning occurs through the observation and imitation of role models
4
Q
how do children learn
A
through looking at others the see how they should behave
5
Q
what is vicarious reinforcement
A
- when you learn about the consequences of behaviour from others
- our tendency to repeat or duplicate behaviours for which others are being rewarded and we adjust our own behaviour accordingly
6
Q
the bobo doll experiment
A
- lab experiment was used in which the independent variable (type of model) was manipulated in 3 conditions:
aggressive model shown to 24 children
non-aggressive model shown to 24 children
no model shown (control condition) - 24 children
7
Q
what did the bobo experiment do
A
- recorded behaviour of young children who had watched an adult behave in an aggressive way towards a bobo doll
- adult hit the doll with a hammer and shouted and abused it
- children then played in a room where there was the bobo doll as well as other toys
8
Q
results of the bobo doll experiment
A
- children who observed the aggressive model acted more aggressively towards the bobo doll than the group who observed the non-aggressive toys
- boys imitated more physically aggressive acts than girls
- boys were more likely to imitate the same sex models than girls
9
Q
what does the LONG ARRM stand for
A
A = attention to the role model
R = retention of the observed behaviour
R = reproduction of the target behaviour
M = motivation to imitate the observed behaviour
10
Q
strengths of the approach
A
- considers role of cognitive factors in learning
- based on scientific lab experiments
- explains learning of complex behaviours such as aggression/eating disorders- effective in explaining specific imitated behaviour
- successfully applied to many areas of psychology
- application to film certification age appropriate content
11
Q
weaknesses of the approach
A
- does not take into account the influence of biological factors on behaviour
- sees behaviour as environmentally determined; some behaviours may be innate
