Types of long term memory Flashcards
What are the two sub-types of LTM?
Explicit and Implicit
What is the difference between the two sub-types?
Explicit - “knowing that”
Implicit - “knowing how”
What are the two types of Explicit memory?
Episodic and Semantic
Episodic memory info
Personal memory of an event; includes contextual and emotional details
Semantic memory info
Facts and knowledge; not personal experiences, could be known by everyone. e.g. functions of objects or appropriate behaviour
(begins as episodic, becomes semantic when you forget when you learnt it)
Implicit memory type
Procedural
Procedural memory info
How to do things, automatic due to repetition and practise, allows us to focus on other things whilst carrying-out these actions
Brain scan evidence info
Episodic - hippocampus
Semantic - temporal lobe
Procedural - cerebellum
As different parts are used it shows the memories are separate.
