Sampling Flashcards
What are the 5 types of sampling?
Random
Stratified
Opportunity
Volunteer
Systematic
Definition, pros + cons of Random sampling
Everyone in population has an equal chance of selection. Assign each name a number then use a random number generator to put half the numbers into group 1 and group 2.
Pros: Unbiased
Cons: May not be representative
Definition, pros + cons of Stratified sampling
Divide population into subsection, randomly select a proportional amount from each one.
Pros: Unbiased, representative
Cons: Time consuming, vital to select correct subsections to sort into
Definition, pros + cons of Opportunity sampling
Whoever is available at the time, select from them
Pros: Easy
Cons: Biased, unrepresentative
Definition, pros + cons of Volunteer sampling
Advertise study, select sample from those who respond
Pros: Convenient, those who respond will want to attend
Cons: Population bias (only certain types of people would respond), may not be representative
Definition, pros + cons of Systematic sampling
Obtain a list of the population, and you select every nth person until your sample is full
Pros: Unbiased
Cons: Some people have no chance of selection, may be unrepresentative
What is the population?
The group you intend to research
What is the sample?
A small cross section of the population, should be unbiased and representative
