What are the two explanations for conformity?

What do the two explanations for conformity mean? When might they apply?
NSI: Conforming to look cool e.g. at a party
ISI: Conforming to be right e.g. taking your lunchbreak on your first day at work
What study proves ISI?
Feir et al Presidential Debate study (participants watched a debate, were told supposedly how the public reacted before being interviewed on what they thought, majority of people agreed with the public)

McGhee and Teevan found students with a higher need for affiliation conformed more
