Types of experiments Flashcards
What is the definition of lab experiments
These are highly controlled experiments which make cause and effect easy to establish between the IV and DV
Strengths of lab experiments (cr)
control and can be replicated
Weaknesses of lab experiments
demand characteristics and experimenter bias
What is the definition of field experiments?
These are experiments carried out in a natural setting where the researcher manipulates the IV to see the effect on the DV.
Strengths of field experiments?
High ecological validity
in a cover exp it has less likelihood of demand characteristics
weaknesses of field experiments?
less control on extraneous variables - hard to establish cause and effect.
difficult to replicate - less reliable data
lack of informed consent - if covert
What is the definition of a natural/quasi experiments?
Experiments which are conducted everyday life but the experimenter does not have control over the independent variable because it occurs naturally
examples of natural/quasi IV
gender, age, ethnicity
strengths of natural/quasi experiments?
less likelihood of demand characteristics
high ecological validity
when covert, high internal validity
weaknesses of natural/quasi experiments?
more expensive and time consuming than lab experiments.
no control over extraneous variables that might bias the results.
Hard for researcher to replicate study
