Scientific processes, Aims and Hypothesis Flashcards
List some of the Ethical Guidelines for the BPS
Consent Deception Debreifing Withdrawl from the investigation Confidentiality Protection of participants
defintion of aim
a precise statement of why the study is taking place
definition of hypothesis
a testable prediction about the variables in a study
def of directional hypothesis
indicates the direction in which results will happen ‘there will be a reduction/ increase in…’
def of non-directional hypothesis
predicts that there will be a difference but does not predict the direction of results
‘there will be a difference’
def of null hypothesis
there will be no difference -predicts IV will not affect DV
def of alternative hypothesis
the IV will have a significant effect on the DV
results are not due to chance and that they are significant in terms of supporting the theory being investigated.
How to write a good hypothesis
- make sure it’s the right type
- Should included IV and DV
- Always operationalise both variables
- this means how will this be measured
- take words from the text
