Q

what is a lab experiment?

A
  • takes place in a controlled, artificial environment
  • the researcher manipulates the IV and records the effect on the DV and control over EV

Q

what is a field experiment?

A
  • takes place in a natural setting
  • researcher manipulates the IV and records its effects on the DV

Q

what is a natural experiment?

A
  • researcher has no control over IV
  • takes place in a natural environment and the IV is natural
  • DV may also be naturally occuring

Q

what is a quasi experiment?

A
  • IV is based on existing difference (e.g people’s age)
  • IV is not manipulated and simply exists
  • DV may be naturally occurring

6
Q

what are the strengths of lab experiments?

A
  • high control over confounding and extraneous variables v= researcher can ensure any effect on DV is due to manipulation of IV
  • high internal validity (more certain demonstrating cause and effect)
  • replication can happen due to high levels of control

7
Q

why is replication important?

A

check the results of any study to see whether findings were just one off

8
Q

what are the limitations of lab experiments?

A
  • lack generalisabilty = artificial env so pts may behave in unusual ways , so can’t be generalised beyond research setting (low external validity)
  • demand characteristics
  • tasks may not represent everyday experience = low mundane realism

9
Q

what are strengths of field experiments?

A
  • higher mundane realism than lab = more natural
  • may produce behaviour more valid and authentic
  • high external validity = ppts are unaware they are being studied

Q

what are the limitations of field experiments?

A
  • loss of control of CVs and EVs due to increased realism
  • cause and effect between IV and DV is harder to establish
  • ethical Issues = ppts are unaware so unable to give consent

  • provide opportunities for research

Q

what are the limitations of natural experiments?

A
  • naturally occurring event may only happen very rarely , reducing opportunities or research
  • lack of control over CVs and EVs
