Choosing A Statistical Test Flashcards
what are the types of data?
- nominal
- ordinal
- interval
what is nominal data?
data which is represented in the form of categories
- data is discrete(one item can only appear in one of the categories)
what is ordinal data?
data ordered in some way (e.g. test scores)
- lacks precision as they are based on subjective opinions (e.g.questionnaires)
what is interval data?
data is based on numerical scales which includes units of equal, precisely defined size
- e.g. temperature, weight
what is the acronym used to memorise the table?
carrots should come mashed with sweetcorn under roast potatoes
what is the first step of choosing a statistical test?
- looking for a difference between conditions/groups
- looking for a correlation
what is the second step of choosing a statistical test?
- this is only for tests for difference
- unrelated design = independent group designs
- related design = repeated measures, matched pairs(ppts are related on some variable)
what is the final step of choosing a statistical test?
levels of measurement
- ordinal, nominal, ordinal
