- informed consent

what is informed consent?
A
- making ppts aware of the aims of the research, procedures and their rights (including the right to withdraw)
- ppts then make an informed judgement whether or not to take part

A
- deliberate misleading or withholding information from ppts at any stage of the investigation

what is protection from harm?
A
- ppts should not be places at any more risk than they would be in their daily lives
- ppts should be protected from physical and psychological harm
- ppts hsould also have the right to withdraw

what is privacy and confidentiality?
A
- ppts have the right to control info about themselves = privacy
- confidentiality = refers to our right, enshrined in law under the data protection act, to have any personal data protected

what includes the set of ethical guidelines?
A
- British Psychological Society, which has its own BPS code of ethics

how do we deal with informed consent?
A
- ppts should be issued with a consent letter or form detailing all relevant info which might affect their decision to participate

how do you deal with deception and protection from harm?
A
- at the end of the study, ppts should give a full debrief (ppts should be aware of the true aims of the investigation and any details they were not supplied)
- ppts should be told what their data will be used for and given the right to withdraw during the study and the right to withhold data if they wish
- ## if ppt is subject to stress or embarrassment then they will require counselling and the researcher provides this

- personal details must be protected, maintain anonymity
- researchers refer to ppts by numbers or initials
