Types of Data Flashcards
1
Q
what are the types of data?
A
- qualitative and quantitative data
- primary and secondary data
2
Q
what is qualitative data?
A
data which is expressed in words
3
Q
what is quantitative data?
A
data is expressed numerically
4
Q
what are strengths of qualitative data?
A
- offers more richness
- greater external validity(more meaningful insight into the participant’s worldview)
5
Q
what are weaknesses of qualitative data?
A
- difficult to analyse (not easy to summarise statistically)
-often rely on subjective interpretation(subject to bias)
6
Q
what are strengths of quantitative data?
A
- relatively simple to analyse
- more objective and less open to bias
7
Q
what are weaknesses of quantitative data?
A
- much narrower in meaning and detail, thus fail to represent ‘real life’
8
Q
what is primary data?
A
- original data that has been collected specifically for the purpose of the investigation by the researcher
- first-hand data from ppts themselves
9
Q
what is secondary data?
A
- data that has been collected by someone other than the person conducting research
- data that already exists
- e.g. journal articles, books or websites
10
Q
what are strengths of primary data?
A
- authentic data obtained from the ppts themselves for the purpose of a particular investigation
11
Q
what are weaknesses of primary data?
A
- requires time and effort (for researcher)
- requires considerable planning, preparation and resources
12
Q
what are strengths of secondary data?
A
- may be inexpensive and easily accessed requiring minimal effort
13
Q
what are weaknesses of secondary data?
A
- information may be outdated or incomplete
- the content of data may not quite match the researcher’s needs or objectives
- may challenge the validity of any conclusions
