what is abstract?
- first section in a journal article is a short summary(150-200) that includes the major elements like the aims and hypotheses, method/procedure, results and conclusions
what is the introductions?
literature review of the general area of the research detailing relevant theories, concepts and studies that are related to the current study
what is the methods subsections?
- design = e.g. independent groups, naturalistic observation and reasons given for the choice
- sample = info related to the people involved in the study (how many, biological or demographic info)
- apparatus/material = details of any assessment instruments used and other relevant materials
- procedure = list of everything that happened in the investigation from beginning to end, includes verbatim record of everything said to participants
- ethics = explanation of how these were addressed within the study
why should the method include sufficient detail?
- so other researchers are able to precisely replicate the study if they wish
what is results?

- e.g. descriptive statistics(graphs), inferential statistics(statistical test), raw data and qualitative methods
what is discussion?
- researcher summarises the results/findings in verbal form (discussed in the context of the evidence presented in the introduction and other research that may have been considered relevant
- discuss limitations and how they can be addressed in future study
- wider implications of the research
what is referencing?
includes the full details of any source or material cited in the report
- format of referencing: author(s), date, article title, journal name(italics), volume(issue), page numbers
