- cost-effective
- large amounts of data quickly as they can be distributed to large numbers
- less effort
- closed questions = straightforward to analyse, fixed choice closed qs
- data can be presented in statistical analysis

- may not always be truthful
- demand characteristics, specifically social desirability bias
- produce response bias, respondents reply in a similar way (acquiescence bias)

- pre-determined set of questions that are asked in a fixed order

- risk of interviewer bias
- analysis is not straightforward (sift through irrelevant info)
- people may lie, social desirability
