types of experiment Flashcards
laboratory
an experiment that takes place in a controlled environment, within which the researcher manipulates the iv to record the effect on the dv , whilst controlling extraneous variables.
field experiment
an experiment which takes place in a natural setting in which the iv is manipulated to record the effect o9fthe dv
natural experiment
an experiment where the change in the iv has occurred naturally and would have occurred regardless of the researcher, the effect on the dv is recorded
quasi
Quasi-experiments contain a naturally occurring IV. In a quasi-experiment the naturally occurring IV is a difference between people that already exists (i.e. gender, age). The researcher examines the effect of this variable on the dependent variable (DV).
strengths of lab experiment
control for extraneous variable
high internal validity
easy to replicate
standardized procedures
validity of the iv not confounding or extraneous variables
strengths of field experiment
control over confounding and extraneous variables
high mundane realism
behaviors can be more valid and authentic
high external validity
strength of natural experiment
high external validity
high ecological validity - lack of investigator involvement
easy to generalize as the variables are naturally occurring and so an be found in other settings
limitations of lab
low external validity
could lack generalizability
low ecological validity
