types of data Flashcards
what is quantitative data
data that represents behaviour in terms of numbers
what is qualitative data
data that can’t be counted or quantified. it concerns opinions or descriptions of different issues, rather than numerical data
what is an advantage of quantitative data
easier to analyse
what is a disadvantage of quantitative data
data oversimplifies reality
what is an advantage of qualitative data
provides detailed information
what is a disadvantage of qualitative data
harder to analyse and difficult to draw conclusions
what is primary data
data that is observed or collected directly from first hand experience
what is secondary data
information that was collected for a purpose other than the current one
what is meta-analysis
using secondary data taken from q large number of studies which involve the same research questions and methodology and combining the results
what is an advantage of primary data
the researcher has a great deal of control over the data and data collection is designed so it fits the aim and hypothesis of the study
what is a disadvantage of primary data
it is a very time consuming and expensive process
what is an advantage of secondary data
it is much simpler to access someone else’s data
-cheaper as less time and equipment is needed
-may have already been subjected to statistical analysis so we know if its significant or not
what is a disadvantage of secondary data
it is hard to find data that fits the exact purpose of the study
