sampling Flashcards
what is a population
an entire group with specified characteristics
what is a target group
the desired population subgroup to be studied
why are sampling methods used
a target group is usually too large to study in its entirety
what is a representative sample
a subset of the target group with a similar distribution of relevant characteristics to the target group
what is a random sample
a sophisticated form of sampling in which all members of the target population have an equal chance of being selected
what are the advantages of random sampling
free from researcher bias, more representative than other sampling methods
what are the disadvantages of random sampling
time consuming, may still be unrepresentative
what is systematic sampling
selecting every nth participant on a list
what are the advantages of systematic sampling
avoids researcher bias, fairly representative
what are the disadvantages of systematic sampling
time consuming
what is opportunity sampling
selecting anyone who is willing and avaliable to take part in an experiment
what are the advantages of opportunity sampling
convenient, cost and time effective
what are the disadvantages of opportunity sampling
unrepresentative, researcher bias
what is volunteer sampling
participants self-selecting to take part in the experiment
what are the advantages of volunteer sampling
less time consuming than other methods
