TYPE 2 DIABETES Flashcards
what is the cellular compensation that initially occurs with t2diabetes
hyperinsulinaemia
after years of hyperinsulinaema what develops
beta cell exhaustion
what is beta cell exhaustion
beta cells initally compensate by pumping out a lot of insulin btu eventually the cells run out of steam and they cant compensate anymore = lack of insulin and target cells become completely resistant to insulin
describe the insulin level throughout the course of t2diabetes
initially - high levels
later - significant fall in levels
what is it a slower onset for t2 diabetes
because it will be longer before a pt is assymptomatic, as they will be insulin resistant before they are diabetic
what are the clinical features of type 2 diabetes
hyperglycaeia
glycosuria
diabetic neuropathy
diabetic vascular disease
is hyperglycaemia an immune supressor
yes
