Trigeminal Neuralgia Flashcards
1
Q
another name for trigeminal neuralgia
A
suicide disease
2
Q
is trigeminal neuralgia unilateral or bilateral
A
unilateral
3
Q
What is trigeminal neuralgia?
A
- recurrent unilateral brief electric shock-like pains
- abrupt onset and termination
- limited to one or more divisions of the trigeminal nerve
- triggered by innocuous stimuli
4
Q
What are the 3 types of trigeminal neuralgia?
A
- classical TN
- secondary TN
- idiopathic TN
5
Q
Describe classical TN.
A
caused by: vascular compression of trigeminal nerve –> morphological change at NERVE ROOT (damage)
6
Q
What is the theory of neurovascular compression in causing TN?
A
trigeminal nerve DEMYELINATION at site of compression –> HYPEREXCITABILITY
7
Q
ignition theory?
A
damaged trigeminal nerve –> hyperexcitability –> self-sustaining firing capability
8
Q
Describe secondary TN.
A
caused by: underlying disease
- MS (most common)
- space-occupying lesion
9
Q
Describe idiopathic TN.
A
TN with no evidence of abnormalities
