Treatment principles of T2D Flashcards

1
Q

What are the aims of management?

A

Treat symptoms

  • Prevent microvascular complications
    aim for HbA1c < 7.0% (53mmol/mol)
  • Prevent cardiovascular complications
  • Screen for complications early while treatable
    eye disease (laser)
    neuropathy (podiatry)
    kidney disease (blood pressure management, ACE inhibitor)

Q

What is T2DM and its risk factors?

A

Insulin resistance + beta cell dysfunction = relative insulin deficiency
OR
Impaired insulin secretion is a hallmark of T2DM
Risk factors for T2DM:
*Family history (maternal and paternal metabolic health)
* Genetic factors
* Environmental factor
*Obesity
*Age
*Pregnancy
*Calorie-dense diet
*Sedentary lifestyle
*Epigenetic factors

G high–> Insulin secretion low–> IR high
