Prevention of, and remission from, type 2 diabetes mellitus Flashcards
To prevent a disease…
A) Change something in the whole POPULATION
OR
B) Target those at high risk and then give preventative
intervention.
what should the main target population
be for T2DM prevention?
- Obesity (direct correlation)- the more obese, the higher chance to get T2DM by focusing on the blood glucose level
- *
One of the crucial prevention strategy in controlling T2DM?
87% of all T2D are above their IDEAL weight
And
Being overweight is the most significant modifiable risk factor for developing T2D
So
Personalised Weight Management
(Calorie reduction and improved exercise)
forms crucial part of prevention strategy
Overcoming Barriers for Prevention of Diabetes?
- How do you identify and engage people at high risk of getting diabetes?
- How do you alter the obesogenic environment?
- How do you deal with health inequalities?
- How do you evaluate if the programme is working?

Summary
- Preventative Medicine is not easy, cheap or routinely performed in the NHS
- Weight loss in people with BMI>30 reduces risk of developing T2D significantly
- T2D in the next 10 years- need to be smarter at targeting the most in need.
- Diabetes Prevention Programmes have to combine population education,
political interventions and targeted personalized medicine.
What is Remission?
a period of time when an illness is less severe or is not affecting someone
Remission ….signs and symptoms of your disease are
reduced. Remission can be partial or complete. In a
complete remission, all signs and symptoms have
disappeared. If you remain in complete remission for 5
years or more, some consider that you are cured.
Summary of managing T2DM?
.Reversal of the hyperglycemia that defines T2D is possible,
along with reduction in the need for medication.
* This has been clearly demonstrated in recently diagnosed T2D patients
and is closely associated with weight loss- similar approach to prevention!
* Diabetes services in the UK are now linking with weight management services
to provide pathways to weight loss for all T2D patients (and high risk individuals).
* It remains to be seen how well the diabetes community engages with this,
and whether it benefits all T2D patients.
