Pathophysiology
A
The direct consequences of increased intracranial
pressure on the brain can be broadly differentiated
as mechanical or vascular. When a mass
lesion develops, a pressure gradient originating
from this area will cause distortion of brain tissue,
midline shift, and displacement of the brain tissue
in a medial or caudal direction (herniation) (Fig. 1).
Herniation is a medical emergency, requiring
prompt treatment to prevent irreversible and often
fatal damage to the brain stem
