trauma and injury Flashcards
what is injury?
hurting yourself caused by external force
what is trauma?
injury that has potential to cause disability or death
what are the 2 types of trauma?
blunt and penetrating
give 3 examples of blunt trauma
falls
crashes
assalts
give 3 examples of penetrating trauma
shooting
stabbing
sharp objects
what are the 2 stages of trauma?
1) involuntary inflammatory response
2) proliferation phase
what are the 4 stages of wound healing?
1) growth of new tissue, replaces old tissue
2) soft tissue repaired
3) scar tissue grows
4) scar tissue begins to fade, strength increases
what is the proliferation phase?
wound healing
1) dead or damage cells removed by phagocytosis
2) new tissue is used during fibroblasts, new blood vessel grown via angiogenesis
3) new tissue formed (granulation tissue)
4) maturation phase - reduction of blood vessels and scar begins the fade
