what is the difference between inspiration and expiration?
expiration = breathe out (trachea)
inspiration = breath in (nose)
what are breathing rate and depth regulated by?
automatic nervous system
what are the tiny hairs in the trachea called?
cilia
(help push out debris)
why does the trachea contain a mucous membrane?
to prevent debris and bacteria entering the lungs
what are the bronchi made up of?
cartilage and smooth muscle which stops the lungs collapsing
what are macrophages in the alveoli for?
remove dead cells and bacteria
what is the moist membrane in the lungs called?
pleura membrane (provides surface tension)
what is the respiratory system?
a series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide
