homeostasis and endocrine system Flashcards
what is the endocrine system?
several glands located throughout the body
what are hormones?
chemical messengers that signal the body to perform functions
what is the endocrine gland?
secret hormones directly into the blood stream
what are exocrine glands?
secrete hormones directly into ducts
give 5 things hormones help
growth
sexual reproduction
sleep
metabolism
tissue function
what is homeostasis?
maintenance of an ALMOST constant internal environment in the body
what 2 systems are involved in homeostasis?
endocrine and nervous systems
what are the 3 components in the negative feedback loop?
receptor, control centre and effector
what is a receptor?
cell, tissue or organ that senses a change in the stimulus
what is the control centre?
it determines the normal range, these process the info and initiate the response
what is the effector?
muscles or glands that produce a response.
muscles = contract
glands = produce hormone
restore optimum condition again
what are all the endocrine glands?
hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, ovaries, testes, adrenals, stomach, pancreas
what is the normal range for blood pressure?
120/80mmhg
what is the normal range for heart rate?
60-100bpm
what is the normal range for respiratory rate?
12-16 bpm
