Transport system- Animal Flashcards
What does blood contain?
Red blood cells, White blood cells, Plasma, platelets
What nutrient does plasma carry that is essential for respiration?
Oxygen
What nutrient does plasma carry that is essential to make proteins?
Amino acids
How are red blood cells specialised?
Biconcave in shape. Have no nucleus, Contain haemoglobin
What is the function of red blood cells?
To carry oxygen round the body
What happens when haemoglobin combines with oxygen?
Oxyhaemoglobin
Where does haemoglobin combine with oxygen?
in the lungs
What system are white blood cells part of?
Immune system
What is the function of white blood cells?
Destroy pathogens
What are the 2 types of white blood cells?
Phagocytes, lymphocytes
What is the process where phagocytes destroy pathogens?
Phagocytosis
how to phagocytes destroy pathogens?
by engulfing them
What type of response is phagocytosis a part of
non specific immune response
What are lymphocytes?
A type of white blood cell that produces antibodies to attack specific pathogens
What does specific in terms of antibodies mean?
Each antibody can act on only one type of pathogen
How do antibody molecules help to destroy invading pathogens?
Antibodies bind to the pathogen forming clumps which are later digested by phagocytes
What is the liquid part of the blood called?
Plasma
Explain why carbon dioxide will diffuse out of muscle cells into the blood during exercise.
There is a higher concentration of co2 in the cells compared to the blood. It diffuses down a concentration gradient
