Transport in Plants CH8 Flashcards
What do the Xylem Vessels do?
Transport water from roots to the rest of the plant
What does the Phloem do?
Transports sucrose and amino acids from the leaves where they are made to the other parts of the plant
What are xylem vessles made of?
Xylem vessels are made mainly of hollow, dead cells, joined end to end. The walls are made of Lignin
Describe Phloem
Phloem tube walls are not completley broken down. The cells form Sieve Plates, which are perferated.
What are Vascular Bundles?
Vascular bundles are a group of xylem vessels and phloem tubes that run through the petiole and veins of the leaaf
Define Transpiration
The loss of water from the leaves through evapouration
What is the transpiration stream?
The transpiration stream is the process by which water is absorbed from the soil through the root hairs as water is lost from the leaves via evapouration
Define Translocation
The movement of sucrose and amino acids in Phloem from where is is made to where it is needed
What is a source and what is a sink?
The part of the plant from which sucrose and amino acids are being translocated from is called the source. The part of the plant where they are being translocated to is called the sink
