Reproduction in humans CH17 Flashcards
When do sperm develop in a man?
At Puberty
When do eggs start to develop in a woman?
Eggs begin to form in the ovaries before a woman is born. At birth the woman will already have thousands of partially developed eggs. When she reaches puberty some of these eggs will fully develop
What is ovulation?
When an egg is fully developed, it bursts out of the ovary into the oviduct. This happens one a month
How do sperm develop?
Sperm develop from the cells in the walls of the tubules which divide my meiosis
Why are the testes outside of the body?
Sperm production is very sensitive to heat. This is why the testes are outside the body
How does the egg get into the oviduct?
Cillia line the funnel which waft the egg into the oviduct. Cillia lining the oviduct move the egg along. Muscles in the wall help move the egg along via peristalsis
What is ejaculation?
The sperm are squeezed along out the mans urethra and into the womans vagina
What is the name given to the fluid containing sperm?
Semen
What is fertilisation?
The fusing of the male and female gametes
What is implantation?
When the embryo sinks into the soft endometrium
Describe the Process of how the egg becomes implanted into the endometrium
- Ovulation. A mature follicle bursts and releases an egg into the oviduct
- Fertilisation. A sperm nucleus fuses with the eggs nucleus, forming a zygote
- The zygote divides
- After a while a ball of cells form
- The cells in the ball keep dividing. As it moves down the oviduct it is called an embryo
- Implantation
- The placenta form
What role does the placenta play?
The placenta connects to the wall of the uterus. The placenta is where substances are exchanged between the mothers blood and babies blood. It is the unborn babies life support
