Plant Nutrition CH6 Flashcards
What is Nutrition?
Taking in useful substances is called feeding or Nutrition
Describe the term Heterotrophic
Animals and fungi that cannot make their own food
Describe the term Autotrophic
Green plants make their own food
Describe the process of Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants manufacture carbohydrate from raw materials using energy from sunlight
What does chlorophyll do?
Chlorophyll is the green pigment in plants which trapps the sunlight energy which is used in photosynthesis
What is the Balanced Equation for the Photosynthesis reaction?
6CO2+6H2O - C6H12O6+6O2
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Inside the chloroplasts
Describe the process of water uptake in plants.
Water is obtained from the soil. It is absorbed by the root hairs which is then carried up the the stem, to the leaves via the xylem vessels.
Describe the process of protein making in plants.
Although the air is more than 70% nitrogen, the gas is an inert gas. Plants absorb nitrate ions from the soil. The nitrate ions are then combined with glucose which makes amino acids.
What are the effects of a deficiency of magnesium and nitrogen in plants?
Low levels of Nitrogen result in weak growth and yellowing of the leaves. Magnesium is needed to make chlorophyll. Without Mg there would be yellowing between the veins of the leaves
What is a limiting factor?
A limiting factor is something present in the environment in such short supply that is restricts life processes
