transport in cells Flashcards
Diffusion
Spreading out of particles of any substances in solution or particles of gas, resulting in net movement from area of high concentrations to an area of low concentration.
What substances does diffusion move
Oxygen and carbon dioxide with urea as the waste product from blood plasma excreted in kidney
Factors affecting rate of diffusion
Concentration gradient, temperature, SA of membrane
An effective exchange surface has:
Large SA, thin cell wall, efficient blood supply, well ventilated
Osmosis
The diffusion of water from a dilute to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane allowing passage of other water molecules
Active transport
Moves substances from a high to low concentrated solution. And requires energy from respiration
When is active transport used
Allows mineral ions to be absorbed into plant root hairs and allows sugar molecules to be absorbed in the gut into the blood
Gaseous exchange info
The lungs are in the upper part of the body, protected by the rib cage and separated from the lower part of the body by the diaphragm.
