Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
What are all living organisms made of?
Cells
What does unicellular mean?
Usually an organism such as a bacteria the consists of just a single cell
What does multicellular mean
Organisms that are made of many cells like humans
What is a eukaryotic cell?
A cell that forms animals and plants
What is a prokaryotic cell?
Bacteria cells
How big are most eukaryotic cells?
between 10 pm and 100pm, diameter of a human hair, can’t see without microscope
How much smaller is a prokaryotic cell then a eukaryotic cell?
10 times smaller
In order of magnitude, how much bigger are eukaryotic cells than prokaryotic?
1 order of magnitude
By how much is something bigger per order of magnitude?
1-10x
2-100x
3-1000x
Which cell has a nucleus?
Eukaryotic cells do
What else does the nucleus help to do?
Protects cell genetic from chemicals in the cytoplasm
What is found inside the nucleus?
Chromosomes. made of DNA
What happens in the mitochondria?
Aerobic cellular respiration
What do the ribosomes make protein from?
Amino acids
What does the cell wall of a plant cell do?
A rigid external barrier made of cellulose, that protects and supports the cell
What is the vacuole? plant call
It is a fluid-filled cavity that stores water and nutrients
What are chloroplasts? Plant cell
The site of photosynthesis and contain the green pigment chlorophyll which absorbs light energy
What is the cell wall made of
Cellulose
What does the vacuole do?
Stores waste products, maintains pH, maintains cell shape
What is the difference between animal/plants cells and bacteria cells?
the lack of nucleus and mitochondria
