Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is photosynthesis
the process by which plants make glucose from sunlight
What type of reaction is photosynthese?
Endothermic in which energy is transferred from environment to chloroplasts by light.
equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water -> glucose x oxygen
What factors effect photosynthesis?
Temperature, light, CO2 concentration, chlorophyll
What is the experiment for measuring oxygen production of a plant?
Pond weed is placed in a test tube full of water, the top is sealed with a bone. A capillary tube also containing water leads into the test tube and it is attached to a syringe. A lamp is placed at a measured distance from the tube.
As photosynthesis occurs, oxygen is produced forming a gas tube in the capillary tube. The distance the bubble has moved is measured using a ruler to calculate the volume of oxygen produced. Many variables can be changed to observe their effects on photosynthesis. Many variables can be changed, but it is important to control all factors so it’s a valid experiment
Increasing factors can also decrease rate of photosynthesis?
Eh if there is an increased temperature but low light, the rate of photosynthesis won’t increase
What is inverse proportion?
A relationship between two factors which involve one increase if and one decreasing.
What are the uses of glucose from photosynthesis?
Respiration, converting to starch for storage, to produce fat or oil for storage, for cellulose, to combine with nitrates to form amino acids to produce protein
What is respiration?
the process of transferring energy from glucose so living processes can occur.
What type of reaction is respiration?
Endothermic as energy is transferred to the environment and can be aerobic or anaerobic
Equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
Equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
Glucose -> lactic acid
Equation for anaerobic respiration in plants (fermentation)?
Glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
Why is more energy needed during exercise?
For muscles to contract
How is oxygen increased during exercise?
Increased heart rate, breathing rate and breath volume
