Transport in animals Definitions Flashcards
Circulatory system
a system of blood vessels with a pump and valves to ensure one-way flow of blood
Single circulatory system
a circulatory system whereby blood passes through all parts of the body in one circuit before returning to the heart
Double circulatory system
a circulatory system whereby blood passes through the heart twice for each complete circuit of the body
Arteries
large blood vessels that transport blood from the heart to the rest of the body
Valves
structures present in the heart and veins that help prevent the backflow of blood
Plasma
a straw coloured liquid which the other components of blood are suspended within
Capillaries
small blood vessels that connect the arterioles and venules and allow for the exchange of molecules(eg. oxygen, nutrients, waste products)
Arteriole
a small branch of an artery that lead to capillaries
Venule
a small vein that connects the capillaries to the veins(also collect blood from capillaries)
Vein
blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from the body’s tissues back to the heart
Lumen
the central hole of a vessel in which blood flows through
Renal artery
blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood to the kidneys
Renal vein
blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from the kidneys back to the heart
Hepatic artery
the blood vessel that carries blood to the liver
Hepatic vein
blood vessels that return deoxygenated blood from the liver back to the heart
