Transitions Flashcards
Explain the difference between change and transition.
Change is external and happens to someone even if they do not agree with it. Transition is an internal process; what happens in people’s minds as they adjust to change.
Transitions are processes (longer) and change is an action (brief)
transition is a major reshaping of your day-to-day existence, a redefining of roles, a remodeling of self-concept, and a reworking of how you conduct your life.
Are transitions and changes independent?
No, all transitions have a change (or series of changes) that may be identified as a trigger. Not all changes cause a transition.
Ex. schedule at work changes, but don’t undergo a transition. You have a child (change) and transition into the role of a parent.
What are the 5 types of transitions?
Situational - Lifestyle transitions. Ex change in careers, unemployment, geographic move, losing a spouse
Developmental - Transitions associated with progressing through the life cycle (often predictable). Ex puberty, leaving home, retiring, menopause, becoming a parent.
Health/Illness - Major changes in health. Ex. spinal cord injury, chronic illness, hospitalization.
Organizational - Involve a major restructuring of leadership environment at work, politics, economic. Ex Changing ownership at work, new manager.
Multiple - Transitions that occur in more than one category.
