whatever or whoever gives ultimate meaning and purpose in one’s life, that invites particular ways of being in the world in relation to others, oneself and the universe
what are the two key concepts regarding spirituality?
FAITH: two modes of use,
- religion or higher power
- way of life (outlook)
RELIGION - organized system of beliefs
a way of understanding and expressing spirituality
Why is spirituality important in nursing/
because suffering illnesses can challenge faith and beliefs resulting in
anger, fear, depression
What does healthy spirituality look like?
peace, acceptance of self, ability to care for self and others in a meaningful way.

What is the primary thing that nurses need to do in relation to spirituality and what is the nurses role in this?
need to respect diversity
nurses listen, support, and make referrals as needed (we are not spiritual professionals)
How do you seek to explore someone’s spirituality?
by seeking understanding (not assessment)
What sort of information should be sought?
does person have values/beliefs that influence health care
any rituals/practices to inform care
sensitivity is important
What is the role of nurses in spirituality?
recognize when there is conflict, seek understanding, and recognizing distress
what does ethical spiritual care look like?
it is recognizing your own biases (reflective practice)
dignity, non-discriminatory, respect
know when to refer to expert
must provide care until alternate nurse can take over
