Aging 3 Flashcards
What is the final developmental task that needed to be addressed in Erikson’s theory?
Integrity vs Despair
Relates to analyzing their life. Note that it is not necessary to come to a positive conclusion about how life was spent, but it is important to be able to come to terms with it.
Robert Peck reworked Erikson’s final stage into 3 developmental tasks. What are they?
Differentiation vs role preoccupation (redefine their worth as something other than work vs holding onto that role)
Body transcendence vs body preoccupation (Understanding you are more than a physical body vs being defined/preoccupied by ailments)
Ego transcendence vs ego preoccupation (Realize that death is inevitable and do a life review. If they accept the assessment can achieve ego transcendence. Can usually be seen by the frequency that they talk about their past)
Explain the disengagement theory (Cummings and Henry)
to cope effectively aging ppl withdraw from customary roles and society
develop increasing self preoccupation and decreased emotional ties.
This theory is no longer accepted
Explain the activity theory
The more active and involved older adults are, the more likely they will be satisfied with their lives.
see continuation of roles or role substitution.
Great support for this theory
Explain continuity theory
Ability to maintain same behavior patterns and lifestyle that existed prior determines degree of engagement in older adults.
Does not take into account that we change throughout our lives
Explain socio-emotional selectivity theory.
Older adults become more selective of social networks. This maximizes positive emotional experiences and minimizes risks.
Explain selection, optimization, compensation theory.
Successful aging is linked to:
selection: lose function so focus on most important to them
optimization: may still be able to do the things you love, but need more practice to optimize ability.
compensation: compensating for deficits. Ex slowing down before a fast part in a piano piece to make it sound faster.
Who is more likely to be involved with aging parents daughters or sons?
adult daughters

Neglect and financial abuse
