Transcription Flashcards
Where does transcription occur?
Nucleus
Write the RNA codon for this DNA code:
3’ ATCGTAACC 5’
Codon: 5’ UAGCAUUGG 3’
Name the 3 phases of Transcription
Initiation, elongation, termination
What does the initiation phase of transcription involve?
RNA polymerase binds promotor region
What transcribes rRNA?
RNA polymerase I
What transcribes mRNA?
RNA polymerase II
What transcribes tRNA?
RNA polymerase III
What does the elongation phase of transcription involve?
Complementary base pairs added 5’ to 3’, DNA read 3’ to 5’
What does the termination step of transcription involve?
Stop code reached —> hairpin loop created
What RNA molecules are involved in transcription?
.rRNA, mRNA, tRNA
What does rRNA consist of? What is its function and where does it occur?
Small (40S) + large (60S) subunits = 80S ribosome in nucleolus
What does mRNA contain?
Codon (3 bases; ea. codon codes an AA)
What does tRNA consist of? What is most important?
4 loops; anticodon and acceptor stem
What does tRNA’s anticodon loop do?
Base pairs w/ mRNA
What does tRNA’s acceptor loop do?
Binds AA (coded for by anticodon)
