Tramadol Mechanism of action
Analgesic.
Works across central nervous system stimulates opiate receptors and blocks noradrenaline and serotonin receptors
Tramadol Indicated for
Moderate pain in combination with paracetamol and ibuprofen
Severe pain if back up not available
Do not administer if another opiate has already been taken
Tramadol Contraindications (2)
Known severe allergy
Aged less than 12 years
Tramadol Cautions (5)
Taken within last 4 hours
Abdominal pain particularly if patient is very unwell or vomiting
Age greater than 75 years particularly if history of dementia or confusion
Confusion
Pregnancy
Tramadol pregnancy and breast feeding
Should usually be withheld if pregnant
May be given if breast feeding
Tramadol Dosage
50mg (1 tablet)
Tramadol adverse effects (4)
Nausea and/or vomiting
Light headed ness or feeling unusual
Sedation
Dry mouth
Tramadol Onset of effect
30 - 60 minutes
Tramadol Duration of effect
4 - 8 hours
