Ipratropium Mechanism of action
Bronchodilator
Blocks acetylcholine receptors causing vagal inhibition
resulting in bronchodilation
Ipratropium Indicated for
Bronchospasm 2ndry to asthma or CORD
Prominent bronchospasm 2ndry to airway burns or smoke inhalation
Ipratropium Contraindications
Known severe allergy
Ipratropium Cautions
None
Ipratropium use in pregnancy and breast feeding
Should be given if Indicated
May be given when breast feeding
Ipratropium Dosage
0.5mg ONCE ONLY (1 ampoule)
Nebulised undiluted with 5mg (1 ampoules) of salbutamol at 8 ltrs/minute
Ipratropium common adverse effects
Tachycardia
Dry mouth
Blurred vision
Ipratropium Onset of effect
2 - 5 minutes
Ipratropium Duration of effect
6 hours
Ipratropium Usual preparation
Ampoule containing 0.5mg in 2ml
