Aspirin - Mechanism of action
Has antiplatelet,
antipyretic,
anti-inflammatory
analgesic effects.
Inhibits formation of prostaglandins and thromboxane.
Aspirin - Indicated for
Miocardial ischaemia
Aspirin - Contraindications (2)
Known severe allergy
3rd trimester of pregnancy
Aspirin - Cautions (3)
Known bleeding disorder
Clinically significant bleeding
Known worsening of bronchospasms.
Aspirin - Use in pregnancy
May cause harm during pregnancy associated with premature delivery.
May be administered if breastfeeding. Advise patient to stop breastfeeding and seek advice from their lead maternity cater
Aspirin - Dosage
300 mg (1 tablet)
Common adverse effects (3)
Increased bleeding
indigestion
Gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding
(but are only associated with chronic administration).
Aspirin- Onset of effect
30 to 60 minutes
Aspirin - Duration of effect
3 - 5 days for anti-platelet activity.
Aspirin - Usual preparation
300mg tablets
