Ibuprofen Mechanism of action
Non steroidal anti inflammatory predominantly for treating pain
Causes reduction in inflammation pain and and fever
Ibuprofen Indicated for
Mild to moderate pain usually with paracetamol
Administered in addition to other measures for severe pain when transport is long.
Ibuprofen Contraindications
Known severe allergy
3rd trimester
Ibuprofen Cautions
Already taken within last 4 hours
Abdominal pain if very unwell OR vomiting
Age greater than 75 years if I’ll, dehydrated or infection
Shock
Known renal impairment
Known bleeding disorder
Significant bleed
Taking warfarin
Pregnancy
Known worsening of bronchospasm with NSAID’s
Ibuprofen Dosage
400mg for adult 80kg or less (2 tablets)
600mg for adult greater than 80kg (3 tablets)
Ibuprofen common adverse effects
Renal impairment
Increased bleeding
Possible gastrointestinal issues with chronic administration
Ibuprofen onset of effect
30 - 60 minutes
Ibuprofen duration of effect
4 - 6 hours
Ibuprofen usual preparation
200mg tablets
